Die Rückkehr der Voyager und die dadurch erlangten Techniken machten ein Überdenken aktueller Raumschiff-Entwicklungen nötig.
Das Prometheus-Projekt wurde zwar weitergeführt, musste jedoch aktualisiert werden.
Die durch den Dominion-Krieg herrschende Resourccen-Knappheit führte dazu, das nur wenige Schiffe diese teilweise
unausgereiften Verbesserungen erhielten, manche sogar nur zu Testzwecken.
Starfleet Command beschloß, den Schiffsbau neu zu beginnen. Bis auf wenige moderne Klassen wie zum Beispiel die Defiant-, die Sovereign- und die Prometheus-Klasse wurde auf die Produktion weiterer Rahmen der bekannten Hüllen verzichtet.
Utopia Planetia bekam den ehrenvollen Auftrag, ein neues Multi-Funktions-Schiff zu konstruieren, das sämtliche neue adaptierte, experimentelle und ausgereiften Techniken und Komponenten beinhalten sollte. Zu Testzwecken wurden Transwarp-Antrieb und Slipstream integriert, da das Flottenkommando in beiden Möglichkeiten genug Potential sah, einen Durchbruch zu erringen.
Im Rahmen und der Hülle des Schiffes wurden zur Verstärkung Tetraburnium-Komponente integriert, und die Hülle - für den Fall, dass der Ablative - Generator versagt - mit Standard - Ablativ - Hüllenpanzerung verstärkt. Das Tom-Paris-Notfall-Schott-System sorgt in kritischen Momenten für das Überleben der Crew im Inneren und kann einen Ausfall der Hüllenintegrität abmildern. Die Schildtechnologie ist eine Kombination neuster Sternenflottentechnologie und Borg-Komponenten.
Die Verwendung all dieser neuen Komponente macht den Prototyp einzigartig. Sollte er sich als fehlerfrei, leicht produzierbar und widerstandsfähig erweisen, wäre es möglich, dass dieser neue Schiffstyp als Standard-Schiff der Flotte etabliert wird.
Die Zeichen stehen gut, wenn man bedenkt, wie sich die Sternenflotte gegen das Dominion und die Voyager alleine gegen den Deltaquadranten behauptet haben.

The return of the U.S.S. Voyager and the techniques attained thereby made a reconsideration of current developments necessary. The Prometheus project was resumed, had to be updated however.
