Während die Sternenflotte ihr Design-Spektrum ausdünnte, war ein kleines Ingenieursteam damit beschäftigt, einen Ersatz für die veraltete Centaur-Klasse zu entwerfen. Die USS Leaf und die gleich benannte Schiffsklasse sind das Resultat dieser Bemühungen:
Als ein relativ kleines Schiff profitiert es von allen Vorteilen kleinerer Einheiten und so fällt die durschnittliche Konstruktionszeit unter die der meisten anderen modernen Sternenflottenschiffstypen. Das Flottenkommando plant in den nächsten 6 Monaten zwölf weitere Schiffe dieser Klasse vom Stapel zu lassen.
Die USS Lothlorien, das Schwesterschiff der USS Leaf, wurde erst kürzlich in einem überraschendem Gefecht mit einem Schiff des totgeglaubten Orion-Syndikats schwer beschädigt.
